The Kenyan government announced on Monday, July 29, the appointment of 46 ICT directors to various state departments and ministries. It is anticipated that these ICT leaders will use their knowledge and experience to help young, jobless Kenyans find work.
The 46 engineers were chosen as part of a current government reorganisation, and their primary goals will be to advance the digital economy and improve citizen service delivery.
John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary of the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, stated, “Their diverse expertise in Research and Digital Innovation, Software Development, E-commerce and Entrepreneurship, Cybersecurity, and Systems Audit and Control will be instrumental in advancing the Ministry’s mission to build an informed and digitally empowered Kenyan society.”
This hiring drive is a part of the Kenyan government’s larger plan to create digital jobs for young people via the creative economy and digital highway, two important pillars of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). This agenda, which aims to increase investments in sectors essential for economic growth and household well-being, acts as a critical accelerator for other economic pillars.
The recently appointed directors will put forth a lot of effort to support the government in accomplishing its challenging digital goals. Through digital transformation projects, their contributions are anticipated to strengthen digital infrastructure, improve public service delivery, increase administrative efficiency, and spur economic growth.
The Kenyan executive has set aside about $125.3 million for ICT sector initiatives for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, a substantial increase over the $108.4 million set up for the 2023–2024 fiscal year.
