Llama 3.1 Impact Grants Unveiled by Meta to Strengthen AI-Powered Organisations in Africa

With the announcement of the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, Meta demonstrated its continued dedication to fostering creative applications of open-source AI to tackle pressing global issues. The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, which build on the accomplishments of earlier grant programs, will give organisations all across the world up to $2 million in funding.

Proposals from organisations with ideas for utilising Llama 3.1 to address social concerns in their communities are invited to apply for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants program. Applications pertaining to public service, science and innovation, economic growth, and other fields will be given particular attention. A maximum of $500,001 will be awarded to the chosen recipients, and the winners will be revealed early in 2019.

Considering the grant, Vice President of Public Policy for Turkiye, the Middle East, and Africa Kojo Boakye “We’re inspired by the diverse projects we’ve seen developers undertake around the world to build with Llama and positively impact their communities,” Meta remarked. We think AI has the greatest potential of any contemporary technology to improve human productivity, creativity, and quality of life. It can also spur economic growth and create new avenues for scientific and medical research advancement. With the help of the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants program, organisations will have more ability to use AI for social good and to effect significant change.

In order to assist potential candidates, Meta will organise a number of regional gatherings in the following locations: Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Latin America, North America, Pakistan, Singapore, Sub-Saharan Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. Additionally, there will be in-person hackathons, workshops, and training sessions. These gatherings will offer technical direction and mentorship, promoting the creation of effective Llama 3.1 applications in regional settings. Organisations who take part in these activities can win up to $100,000 in additional speciality rewards.

After being launched in October 2023, the first Llama Impact Grants attracted over 800 submissions from more than 90 countries. The funding recipients and the winners of the Llama Impact Innovation Awards will be revealed in September when the 20 finalists have turned in their final proposals.

The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants will accept applications from Monday, August 5, 2024, through Friday, November 22, 2024. In order to take advantage of this chance to use AI to promote social impact, Meta welcomes qualified organisations to submit their proposals. We’ll assess each proposal according to these selection criteria.
