Cape Town: The Erica Primary School in Belhar’s robotics and coding teams participated in this year’s World Robot Olympiad South Africa in Johannesburg and came away with individual victories.
The school’s teams placed sixth and eighth in the Explorer Lite division and fifth and twenty-five in the Explorer Prime division. Thirty schools nationwide participated in the Olympiad.
After submitting robot designs based on themes, the school also finished fifth nationwide in the Future Innovators Junior 2024 category.
After leading the team for two years, coach Vernon Petersen declared the trip to be “incredible”. The experience came with a great deal of labour and education. We are just relieved that everything went smoothly and that we were taken care of. Regarding the learners’ rankings, Petersen showed his pride.
“We are incredibly joyful and proud. Their accomplishments are extremely amazing, especially considering that they faced off against prestigious institutions and organisations, which have access to a wealth of resources.
He claimed that despite the difficulty of the task, the students turned up and did their best. Their impressive results in various areas speak much about their skills and diligence.
“This is an achievement for our community especially, and an achievement for every other school that faces such challenges.” Young people from all around the world come together for the World Robot Olympiad, which combines robotics, science, technology, and education.
“Thank you to everyone that helped us, Thank you… “Funds were the biggest of the challenges. Thank you to Sakhikamva Foundation, parents, and colleagues thank you too,” Petersen remarked. We were still able to make it and show up after contacting nearby companies who were unable to assist.
Our children demonstrated that their efforts should not be underestimated, especially when it comes to support. According to Petersen, they were now getting ready for the October First Lego League competition. “We require all the help we can get”
